AP Stats Students Take On Real-World Data in Midterm Project

At the Upper School, AP Statistics students are turning theory into practice with a midterm project that’s as engaging as it is educational. Working in small groups, they are acting as statisticians, collecting and analyzing data from their peers to answer two key questions:
  1. Which dining hall favorites—like chicken tenders, burgers, or burrito bowls—should be featured more often?
  2. How many hours of sleep do students get each night, and how does framing the question affect the answers?
Armed with curiosity, and a solid understanding of Simple Random Sampling, students gathered responses, analyzed trends, and reflected on their methods. Their findings came to life in Google Slides presentations, complete with graphs, data summaries, and insights about how statistics shape the world around us.

This project isn’t just about crunching numbers. It’s about learning to ask the right questions, spot bias, and think critically—skills that go far beyond the classroom. By tackling real-world problems, students gain confidence in their ability to analyze data and communicate meaningful conclusions.

Projects like this are at the heart of what makes learning at the Upper School special: blending academic rigor with hands-on experiences that prepare students for the future. With presentations just around the corner, we can’t wait to see the creativity and insights these young statisticians bring to the table!
