Technology and Learning

Direct, Intentional, and Human-Centered

At Moravian Academy, we believe technology should serve learning, creativity, curiosity, and human flourishing by supporting the human experiences at the heart of education. Technology should not displace a richer human, physical, social, or intellectual experience simply because it is easier or more efficient.
Our approach to technology is grounded in our mission and Portrait of a Graduate. We strive for students to become collaborative communicators, ethical citizens, resilient learners, creative thinkers, compassionate leaders, and balanced individuals who are prepared to thrive in a complex and rapidly changing world.
Grounded in these commitments, we use technology intentionally, selectively, and developmentally, guided by research-informed frameworks and a fundamental question:
"Does this use of technology serve a clear learning purpose by improving, transforming, or expanding the learning experience, and does its educational value outweigh what it might replace?"
Across their Moravian experience, students will use technology as a tool for learning while developing the knowledge, skills, and judgment to navigate and shape an increasingly digital and AI-enabled world through a coherent, developmentally appropriate scope and sequence.

Key Highlights of Our Technology Program

Human-First Philosophy
We constantly evaluate how we use technology in the classroom. Every tool must serve a clear educational purpose, expanding learning while protecting the vital physical, social, and emotional experiences of childhood and adolescence.
Developmentally Tailored Integration
Technology access evolves alongside our students. From foundational, low-tech play in the Beginning School to 1:1 iPad access in Middle School and 1:1 MacBook environments in High School, we ensure students receive the right tools at the right age.
Future-Ready Skill & Character Building
Beyond teaching digital fluency, we empower students to understand the impact of technology on their well-being, relationships, and focus. Our curriculum builds foundations in media literacy, computational thinking, and the ethical considerations of modern AI.

Developmental Scope & Sequence

Beginning School
Preserving Wonder & Discovery
In these foundational years, learning centers on relationships, rich language, sensory exploration, and play. Technology plays a minimal, adult-guided role, preserving childhood curiosity and fostering the critical capacity for self-regulation and focus.
Lower School
Inspiring Curiosity & Character
As foundational academic skills take root, technology is introduced thoughtfully to enhance problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity. We protect screen-free learning, ensuring students develop deep critical thinking both with and without digital assistance.
Middle School
Cultivating Literacy & Ethical Judgment
Students transition from using technology to understanding its broader impact. Beyond developing fluency in media literacy, computational thinking, and AI, students examine how digital spaces affect well-being, learning to make intentional, healthy choices.
Upper School
Empowering Strategic & Ethical Leadership
High school students leverage technology for high-level research, innovation, and global collaboration. As they critically evaluate the societal impacts of emerging tools, they graduate prepared to direct technology toward meaningful, ethical purposes.

Upper School Digital Environment Policy (Grades 9–12)

Fostering Focus, Deep Learning, and Active Connection
To support focus, deep learning, and active personal connection, Moravian Academy implements a restrictive cell phone policy during the school day. Rather than collecting or locking away devices, the school partners with The Commons to automatically pause distracting apps, websites, and social media via a campus geofence during school hours (8:00 a.m.–3:15 p.m.). While personal electronic devices remain off and stored in backpacks, students retain physical access to their phones for emergency voice calls, necessary medical tracking, and approved educational tools. The goal of this privacy-first approach is not to eliminate technology, but to help students cultivate healthy digital habits, minimize passive screen time, and foster a present, engaged learning community.
