Concussion Safety & Return-to-Play Guidelines
In the event of a head injury exhibiting any signs or symptoms of a concussion, the following protocols must be followed:
Phase 1: Immediate Post-Injury Response
- Immediate Removal: Removed from the game; may not return to play.
- Medical Evaluation: Required to check for serious intracranial pathology.
- Post-Injury Assessment: Neuropsychological testing is considered the proper standard.
- Rest: No activity; complete rest until the athlete is asymptomatic.
- ImPACT Testing: A post-concussion ImPACT test must be administered.
Phase 2: Graduated Return-to-Participation
If the athlete passes the ImPACT test, they must complete the following stages in order before returning to play:
- Light aerobic exercise
- Sport-specific training
- Non-contact drills
- Full-contact drills
- Game play
Note: These guidelines have been established to help reduce the risk of Second Impact Syndrome.
