9th Grade Retreat: Building Connections and Fostering Growth

Jennifer TumSuden, Assistant Director of the Merle-Smith Campus; Dean of Students
On Monday, September 30, Moravian Academy’s 9th grade, along with the Merle-Smith Campus Student Council and members of the student support team, embarked on an exciting overnight retreat at Pocono Valley Resort. With phones set aside, students embraced the beauty of the 350-acre campus and dove into activities focused on teamwork, reflection, and stepping outside their comfort zones.

The day was packed with memorable moments—spirited volleyball games between the Student Council and the 9th grade, dual ziplining across the lake, and a group challenge on the AquaPark course. Paddleboarding, giant swings, and moments of camaraderie filled the day. In the evening, students relaxed and chose their adventures: crafting bracelets, playing basketball, or gathering around the campfire for a Justin Bieber sing-along, there was something for everyone. One student even made an unforgettable memory by rescuing a baby turtle!

Beyond the fun, the retreat allowed students to grow as collaborative and confident communicators. Whether encouraging a classmate on the zipline, strategizing during a volleyball match, or reflecting together by the lake, students practiced the kind of open, supportive communication that builds strong relationships and helps form the foundation of a thriving community.

Without phones, students were more present, opting for morning walks in their pajamas around the lake, hot chocolate in hand, rather than scrolling through social media. The unplugged atmosphere encouraged authentic, face-to-face interactions—something we value deeply at Moravian Academy. These connections, built on clear and empathetic communication, are essential as students learn to express themselves and support their peers.

For some, spending a night away from home as a new high schooler was a challenge, but students adapted beautifully, stepping up and supporting one another. The retreat not only helped ease the transition into high school but also set a strong foundation for personal growth, class unity, and confident self-expression that will continue throughout the year.

We are incredibly proud of our 9th graders for their willingness to take risks, embrace new experiences, and communicate with confidence and care. As they continue their high school journey, we look forward to seeing them grow into thoughtful, compassionate leaders.
