Exploring New Perspectives: Fourth Grade Dives into Greek Myths at Moravian Academy

Katy Kish
Fourth-grade students recently wrapped up an engaging and insightful unit on Greek myths, blending literary exploration with creative expression. This comprehensive study focused on analyzing point of view and theme through three distinct myths, encouraging students to think critically and creatively.

Each myth was explored through four unique versions: a third-person anchor story, followed by first-person narratives, dramatic scripts, and reverse poetry. This multifaceted approach allowed students to compare how different perspectives reveal various details and nuances within the same story.

Students deepened their understanding by analyzing themes and supporting their ideas with text evidence. They also flexed their creative muscles by crafting their own narratives, retelling a moment from the myths through a fresh perspective—complete with sensory details and dialogue drawn from the original texts.

The unit culminated in a rigorous editing process, where students refined their writing by strengthening verbs, incorporating complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions, and enhancing descriptions with adverbs. To bring their learning full circle, each student penned a final essay examining a theme from the myths and connecting it to the modern world.

The results of their hard work are now proudly displayed on a vibrant bulletin board, featuring either their polished narratives or theme essays, each accompanied by a thoughtfully crafted illustration. This project not only highlighted their literary skills but also celebrated creativity, critical thinking, and the joy of discovery—hallmarks of a Moravian Academy education.
