At Moravian Academy, our mission to nurture the joyful spirit of each learner aligns seamlessly with our commitment to responsible citizenship and community engagement. Recently, our middle school students participated in a dedicated community service day, where they had the opportunity to choose from various impactful activities. Options included park cleanups, animal care at Gress Mountain Ranch, and organizing essential supplies for homeless students in Allentown. This hands-on experience not only allowed our students to contribute to their community but also emphasized the importance of compassionate action.
One of the standout initiatives took place at the Allentown School District, where a group of students, led by Ms. Coffey, worked alongside Ali Wight, a Swain Campus parent and homeless liaison for the district. Ali expressed her heartfelt gratitude for our students’ efforts, sharing how they tirelessly unpacked, inventoried, and organized supplies for homeless students and families in need.
Ali's reflections highlight the profound impact of our students' choices. When asked why they signed up for this activity, each student provided varied yet powerful responses, all resonating with the same underlying theme: a desire to make a meaningful and lasting difference.
Nyomi Russell '29 exemplified this sentiment when she chose to follow her heart rather than the crowd. She recognized the importance of the task at hand and embraced the opportunity to support those in need. Similarly, Hugo Meyerhoefer '31shared how his mother’s work with the homeless population inspired him to contribute to this cause. His respect for her commitment shaped his decision to help, demonstrating how family values can inspire civic responsibility.
John Haight '30, another student who joined the effort, showcased exceptional organizational skills as he focused on unpacking and breaking down boxes without pause for nearly two hours. His dedication to completing the task efficiently reflects the values we instill at Moravian Academy: hard work, respect, and generosity.
Ali’s gratitude encapsulates the essence of our mission, as she noted, “Thank you for developing a school that fosters a community, that teaches humanity and that empowers the leaders of tomorrow.” Her kind words remind us of the critical role our school plays in shaping compassionate citizens who understand the importance of giving back.
At Moravian Academy, we believe that every act of service, no matter how small, contributes to a greater understanding of who we are and who we can become. We are grateful for the opportunity to instill these values in our students and look forward to seeing the lasting impact of their compassionate actions within the community.
