Challenge by Choice: Middle School Students Explore New Heights at Blue Mountain
Erin Coffey, Outdoor Education Coordinator
On Friday, October 18th, grade 7 and 8 students embarked on an adventure to Blue Mountain Resort's Adventure Climbing Park. They faced the challenges of the high ropes course, rock climbing wall, and zipline—all while working together to push beyond their comfort zones.
The trip centered around embracing the "challenge by choice" mindset. Each student was encouraged to step into their personal challenge zone, whether by scaling the towering rock wall, navigating the balance-testing high ropes, or taking a leap of faith on the zipline. For many, the initial hesitation was palpable, but with the support of classmates, they tackled obstacles that once seemed insurmountable.
Camaraderie was a highlight of the day. Whether offering words of encouragement, lending a steady hand, or cheering from the ground, students collaborated to overcome both mental and physical barriers. From conquering the high ropes to taking that final leap off the zipline platform, they displayed remarkable resilience and teamwork.
Students practiced trust, communication, and support for one another in a challenging environment, reinforcing the sense of community that defines the grade 7 and 8 teams.
These students embraced their challenge zones, stepped out of their comfort zones, and discovered the power of teamwork during this adventure. The day was filled with personal triumphs, strengthened friendships, and memories that will last well beyond this fall outing—showcasing their ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and support one another as they grew together in a spirit of curiosity and resilience.
