Fostering Sustainability: Collaborative Innovations Shared at PAISBOA Meeting
Katie Burd
Each fall, Katie Burd, Moravian Academy’s Head of Sustainability and History Teacher, joins sustainability coordinators from Philadelphia Area Independent Schools at the PAISBOA Sustainability Meeting. This annual gathering provides a platform for educators to share innovative ideas and inspire one another to deepen their schools' commitment to environmental sustainability. Hosted this year by Norwood-Fontbonne Academy, the meeting highlighted the integration of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into middle school curricula, emphasizing the importance of teaching students about sustainability from a young age.
Exciting initiatives were shared, including student-managed vertical gardening projects, eye-opening demonstrations on the decomposition of organic versus fast food, and opportunities for students to contribute to Ecosystemic, an online student environmental magazine. These collaborative efforts align with Moravian Academy’s mission to foster responsible global citizenship, inspiring us to continue finding new ways to foster sustainability across our campuses.
