Celebrating Hispanic Heritage: Grade 5 Orff Ensemble Plays 'La Bamba'

Anileys Bermudez, Music Teacher
This month, the grade 5 Orff ensemble is learning the rhythms of "La Bamba" as part of our Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations. In the Orff ensemble, students play xylophones and marimbas together, learning about music by making it themselves.

As they work on "La Bamba," a well-known traditional Mexican folk song that gained worldwide popularity in the 1950s, the students are doing more than just playing notes. They're figuring out how the song is put together, trying out different rhythms, and even creating their own versions. This hands-on approach helps them think critically about music.

Playing in the ensemble also teaches students to work well with others. They learn to listen carefully to their classmates and adjust their own playing in response. It's like having a conversation, but with music instead of words.

By learning "La Bamba," the students are also learning about Hispanic culture. They're discovering how music can tell stories and bring people together. It's a great way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month while also developing important skills.

We're excited to share our students' hard work with you. We invite you to join us for our upcoming Harvest Feast concert, where you can hear our grade 5 Orff ensemble perform "La Bamba" and see firsthand how they've grown as musicians!
