Pre-K Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with a Delicious Lesson in Culture and Counting

Lorna Graham, Pre-K Collaborative
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Pre-K students embarked on a fun and educational culinary adventure! Together, they created a delicious treat for the class to enjoy—guacamole—while learning about Hispanic culture and enhancing their math skills.

Their exploration began with the book One Is a Piñata: A Book of Numbers by Roseanne Thong. Through the story, students were introduced to various cultural items and traditional foods, all while practicing counting to ten. The vibrant illustrations and engaging narrative sparked their curiosity about Hispanic traditions. They learned the names of popular foods from Hispanic cultures, including salsa, aguas frescas, bolillos, horchata, and, of course, guacamole.

With this newfound knowledge, the students worked together to gather and count the ingredients for their guacamole. They practiced essential math concepts by counting each ingredient—avocados, tomatoes, onions, lime juice, and salt—as they prepared the dish. The activity allowed them to apply their counting skills in a real-world context, making the learning process fun and interactive.

As the students mashed avocados and mixed the ingredients, they honed their fine motor skills and developed teamwork as they collaborated. This hands-on activity fostered cooperation, as they worked together to prepare and taste their delicious creation.

Beyond the culinary and math skills, the lesson helped students appreciate cultural diversity. They learned that food is not only a source of nourishment but also an important part of traditions and community in Hispanic cultures. The experience deepened their understanding of different cultures, encouraging curiosity and respect for the diversity that enriches our school!

After putting the finishing touches on their guacamole, it was time for the best part: the taste test! The students eagerly sampled their creations, celebrating both their teamwork and their newfound knowledge of Hispanic cuisine.
