Bringing Fantasy Worlds to Life: Fourth Grade Book Project

Katy Kish
Fourth graders recently completed their first trimester book project: creating a setting from a fantasy novel of their choice. Using materials like Legos, clay, and paint, students built imaginative scenes inspired by text evidence, each one unique and reflective of their understanding of the story.

The project wrapped up with a gallery walk, where students proudly shared their work. Fifth graders joined as a curious and thoughtful audience, asking questions that deepened the conversations about the books and projects. This was also an opportunity for fourth graders to practice public speaking, as they presented their work in small groups and answered questions confidently—important skills they develop through projects like these.

As part of the new Fishtank curriculum, this project encourages independent reading while blending creativity, critical thinking, and communication. For many students, the highlight was seeing their literary visions come to life in a hands-on way—a joyful celebration of learning and self-expression.
