Building Critical Thinkers: Harkness Discussions and Dynamic Learning in 8th Grade Humanities
In 8th Grade Humanities at the Swain Campus, students use innovative learning methods like the Building Thinking Classrooms model and the Harkness Discussion approach. These techniques deepen critical thinking, enhance discussion skills, and strengthen argument writing, all while aligning with Moravian Academy’s mission to nurture students’ joyful spirit and empower them as global citizens.
The Building Thinking Classrooms model, first introduced in middle school math, encourages active problem-solving on the board in small, collaborative groups. Students exchange ideas and break down strategies, engaging deeply with the material. This hands-on approach has been adapted to the Humanities curriculum, fostering a more interactive and collaborative learning environment.
This year, the Harkness Discussion method has been integrated into the classroom. For homework, students read, annotate, and prepare notes to participate in discussions actively. During class, their thoughts are shared on a collective board, providing a visual framework for conversation. While students lead the dialogue, the teacher supports and guides as needed, promoting ownership of learning and effective communication.
The class began the year by discussing Life of Pi, diving into the novel’s themes of survival, faith, and identity. These conversations have sparked insights, thoughtful questions, and deeper engagement with the text, laying a strong foundation for the year.
In each class, students read, write, and think critically. After discussions, they refine their ideas into written reflections, further developing their ability to express and support their analysis.
By blending the Harkness Discussion approach with the Building Thinking Classrooms model, students engage in deep, thoughtful dialogue and critical thinking. This dynamic, student-centered approach brings energy and creativity to the classroom, reflecting Moravian Academy’s commitment to fostering growth and excellence.
