Tips for Engaging with Heritage Months and Awareness Days

By engaging in these conversations, you’re helping your child develop the critical thinking and empathy needed to thrive in an interconnected world.
  1. Encourage Reflection: Ask your child what they learned during these celebrations and how they feel about the diverse histories and cultures represented. Open-ended questions can help them articulate their thoughts and feelings. Example: “ “I’m curious about what you learned during our school's celebration of [specific heritage]. Can you share something interesting?”
  2. Share Stories: Relate personal experiences or family traditions that connect to the heritage being celebrated. This personal connection can enrich their understanding and appreciation of different cultures. Example: ““In our family, we [share tradition]. This reminds me of how [specific culture] celebrates [aspect of their culture]. What do you think about that?”
  3. Explore Together: Find books or resources related to the heritage months. Learning together can foster curiosity and deepen their understanding of cultural diversity. Example: “ “Let’s check out this book about [specific culture] together! I’d love to hear your thoughts afterward.”
  4. Model Empathy: Discuss the importance of embracing and respecting all identities. Highlight the value of cultural competency and how it contributes to a more inclusive community. 
  5. Discuss the Importance of Diversity: Relate discussions of diversity to your own life experiences. Emphasize how embracing different cultures and identities enhances both personal and professional relationships. Example: ““In my job, I’ve seen how diverse teams lead to more innovative ideas and solutions. How can we encourage diversity in our own lives and community?”
  6. Encourage Curiosity: Foster an environment where your child feels comfortable asking questions about different cultures and histories. Example: “If you ever have questions about what we’re learning, feel free to ask! I’m always learning too and appreciate when I have a space to explore.”
